Railroad Memorabilia Historical/Preservation Societies

Railroad and Public Transportation Museums

Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum, Inc. - The museum offers regular summer weekend excursions between Lenox and Stockbridge, information about railroading history in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, two restored former New Haven Railroad stations and an exhibit about the Gilded Age and the Berkshire Cottages.

Cape Cod Chapter, NRHS (West Barnstable Train Station and Historical Museum) - Since 2001, the Cape Cod Chapter, NRHS non profit operates and maintains this 100 year old New Haven station and historical railroad museum which houses a display of railroadiana, for all ages to enjoy on Saturdays from May through October, including selling scenic train ride tickets on the Cape Cod Central.

Connecticut Trolley Museum - Featuring a collection of many types of streetcars, interurban cars and other electric railway equipment, plus a narrated three-mile round trip trolley ride.

Danbury Railroad Museum - The museum offers railroad history, rail excursion trips, a collection of original and restored rolling stock, and opportunities for hands-on railroad work at "12 inches to the foot" scale.

Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum - Learn about the history that the railroad played in the City of Fall River, MA.

Railroad Museum of New England - This site provides information on the museum and the Naugatuck Railroad that operates between Waterbury and Thomaston Dam, CT.

Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad - The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt foundation dedicated to the preservation and restoration of one of the original two-foot narrow gauge railroads that were unique to the state of Maine. This railroad, located in the mountainous region of Franklin County, was the longest of the five two-foot railways that once serviced the state.

Seashore Trolley Museum - Since 1939, this museum, run by the New England Electric Railway Historical Society (NEERHS), has grown into the oldest and largest electric railway museum in the world, with over 200 cars in its collection.

Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum - Ride on the beautifully restored 1896 trolley car. Antique pump car rides are often available. The Visitors Center houses a display of local railroad and trolley related information, artifacts and pictures as well as a Kids Corner and TrolleyShop museum store.

The CT Eastern Railroad Museum - The Connecticut Eastern Chapter of the National Historical Society runs this museum of railroad memorabilia.

Memorabilia Historical Societies

Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society - A non-profit, historical and educational organization, meeting monthly, holding activities and maintaining archives.

New Haven Historical and Technical Association - A non-profit group dedicated to the preservation of the history of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Company and its predecessor and subsidiary companies.

Railroad Station Historical Society - Encourages the preservation and growth of historical knowledge of railroad stations/depots and other railroad/railway structures worldwide.

Friends of Bedford Depot Park - Honoring and Preserving Our Local Railroad History in Bedford, Massachusetts, and Surrounding Communities.

Cape Cod Rails - A site devoted to a rail fan's love of trains, especially on (but not limited to) Cape Cod.

The 470 Club - A not-for-profit educational and historical organization based in Maine, that stores and maintains a collection of railroad equipment at the Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire.

Railroading in the Northeast - Photos organized by Engine Model and Builder, specializing in Steamtown and Northeastern PA.

The Flying Yankee Restoration Group - Online Exhibit of the "Flying Yankee" by a group restoring a unit in New Hampshire.

Railroad Stations in New Hampshire and in Massachusetts - A site devoted to the history, location, and current uses of railroad depots in those states. Almost 300 standing stations and over 500 different stations are listed for Massachusetts alone!

Large Scale and Live Steam

Pioneer Valley Live Steamers - Provides a description of the railroad located in Southwick, MA, and the types of motive power that can be seen there.

Waushakum Live Steamers - Provides a description of the club's facilities and history, as part of an effort to promote interest in and knowledge of steam locomotion.

Chesapeake & Allegheny Live Steamers - This organization won the "Best of Baltimore, 1996" Award as the "Best Cheap Thrill for Overgrown Kids."

Small Scale (N, HO, S, O)

Amherst Railway Society - A community fascinated by railroads. One of the premier model railroad clubs in New England. ARS also sponsors the "Railroad Hobby Show" in West Springfield, Mass every January - one of the largest railroad hobby shows in the country.

Boston Metro Hi-Railers - Model train club with the largest O-gauge model train layout in Massachusetts. Based in Wilmington, MA

North Shore Model Railroad Club - This club models the Chesapeake System, a fictitious railroad based on the 'merger' of the Chesapeake and Lake Erie, Cumberland Western, and the Chesapeake and Hudson Railroads.

South Shore Model Railroad Club - This club models the East Coast Lines, and is one of the oldest modeling clubs in the US, over 60 years in existence!

National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) - The largest organization devoted to the development, promotion, and enjoyment of the hobby of model railroading.

Nashua Valley Railroad Association, Inc. - "Home of the New England Rail System," with links to other local model railroad clubs.

Internet Resources (Forums, Search Sites, References, etc.)

The New England Railfan-Railroad.net - This forum is meant for the discussion of the railroads of the New England states, both past and present.

Railserve - The Hypertext switchyard of railroad related sites, forums, and other railroad information resources.

Trainriders Northeast - A grassroots citizens organization to explore the feasibility of having Amtrak extend the Northeast corridor passenger trains from Boston, MA to Portland ME as a first step to expanding service to other areas of Northern New England.

F40 Preservation Society - Site devoted to preservation of the F40. Content thin, except for a potentially useful page listing the status of Amtrak F40s (which may be out of date). No mention of F40s bought/owned by other railroads.

Railfan & Railroad Magazine - The online home of Railfan & Railroad magazine, where you will be able to get the scoop on all the latest railroad news, order books ..

Railpace Magazine - And all the latest news and photos!

Trains.com - Has all the railroad and model railroad related magazines published by Kalmbach Publishing Company.

Railroad Advocacy and Other Railroad Related Sites

Operation Lifesaver - A nationwide, non-profit public information program dedicated to eliminating collisions, injuries and fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way.

The Mystic Valley Railway Society - Under the slogan "Bee Line to Adventure" they have crossed many tracks in the pursuit to discover "New England and Beyond" primarily by train.
